Why You Should Never Give Up On Your Dreams
Everybody has dreams. Some may be a little more lofty than others, which can make them seem impossible.
The world can be a cruel place for big dreamers. It’s very easy to get discouraged and give up on your dreams when you feel like the odds are stacked against you.
While there are some cases where letting go of unrealistic dreams is the right thing to do, in most cases, this is not the answer.
In this blog post, we’ll take a look at some of the main reasons why you should hold onto your dreams and never give them up.
You might be giving up too soon
A lot of times, people will give up on their dreams way too quickly.
What is Napoleon Hill’s “three feet from gold” idiom?
It’s the idea that there is treasure, or gold, three feet from you, but because you gave up just before reaching it, you never found it.
The idea was popularized following the release of his self-help book Think and Grow Rich, an international bestseller.
The point is, there’s always a danger that you could be throwing in the towel right before you’re set to realize your dreams.
Giving up means defeat and failure
When you give up on your dreams, you’re accepting defeat and failure. This is ultimately the only way that a person truly fails – when they give up.
By continually working on achieving your dreams, it can never be said that you failed or were defeated.
Once you accept defeat of any kind, it will follow you into future battles. Before long, you’ll have grown accustomed to it.
If you give up, you didn’t want it enough
The obstacles standing in the way of you and your dreams are there to test your hunger – to see how much you really want something.
The person who gives up chasing their dreams is someone who clearly didn’t want it badly enough. Thus, they don’t reap the rewards that perseverance brings.
You’ll feel miserable
Dreaming keeps us alive, gives us something to work toward. If you give up on your dreams, you’ll feel empty inside.
Sometimes dreams are what keep the flame of life burning, and we risk extinguishing it and removing our very purpose when we give up dreaming.
This will inevitably lead to feelings of depression and worthlessness, because a person without a purpose is merely an empty vessel.
You won’t grow as a person
When you’re working toward achieving your goals and dreams, this requires you to learn and grow, whether it be learning new skills, gaining new knowledge, or working on your belief in yourself.
If you’re not constantly reaching for the stars and trying to improve yourself in order to succeed, you’ll stagnate.
You’ll always wonder “what if?”
If you give up on your dreams, the question of “what if?” will haunt you for the rest of your life. This is one powerful force that never goes away, and eventually starts to eat away at your soul.
It would mean regretting every moment where you didn’t reach for the stars, and then wondering what could’ve been had you stayed the course. You’ll resent yourself, your life, and the people in it, and you’ll never be content.
Where would the world be without other people’s dreams?
The world was built on the dreams of persistent men and women – those who took risks and stuck it out, despite the odds not being in their favor.
It is because of this persistence and sheer unwillingness to give up that we have the technology we enjoy today. Every invention started out as someone’s idea – a person’s dream that they made a reality.
Imagine what the world would look like if Thomas Edison hadn’t invented the light bulb. Now, it can be argued that eventually someone else would have gotten there, but how long would humanity have had to wait?
When you give up on your dreams, you could be robbing the world of the next light bulb.
When should you give up on your dreams?
There are, of course, a number of reasons why some dreams are best abandoned, but the trouble is separating those from the ones you should hold onto.
Some of the things you should consider when deciding whether or not to give up on a dream are:
-
The costs – If a dream is going to bankrupt you or get in the way of your current life, then maybe it’s not worth pursuing.
-
The attainability factor – There are some things in life we dream about but know they’re unrealistic. If your dream is to marry royalty, you should probably hang that one up.
-
Your suitability – How equipped are you with the necessary skills or knowledge to achieve your dreams? What will it take to get you to prepared?
-
The time – If the pursuit of your dream is going to take more years than you have, focusing on something less time-intensive.
-
Your motives – Why do you want to achieve this particular dream? Are your motives pure?
Giving up a dream in order to see another through
There may be times when the dream you’re holding onto is actually keeping you from your ultimate dream. You might have taken one path when in fact you should have taken another, and giving up would put you back on the right track.
Sometimes there are other, more suitable things you could be doing with the time and resources you’ve plowed into this unattainable dream, so giving it up opens the door for an achievable one that might make you happier.
This is where listening to your heart really comes into play. It will tell you what you desire most, and that thing is the one you’ll never give up on, no matter what the cost.
